Are Consoles Dying Like Xbox 360? CNN Says Yes

Consoles are dying. Right?! That's the case CNN makes in a new feature article that looks into why they think that videogame consoles are on the way out.

However, as always, you can make up your own decision on whether they are correct or not. I personally believe that consoles are NOT dying. Plenty of people prefer to play on a console rather than a PC, handheld, tablet or mobile device... only because this current generation has lasted so long and thus interest has waned over the years, are people now pulling the "dying" alarm bells. Besides, for how long have we heard these same sentiments regarding how the PC industry was dying or all but dead?

To quote from the article:

If console gaming were a first-person shooter, it would be taking heavy fire right now. A red hue would envelop the viewable screen from all sides, an ominous sign of spilled blood. Or worse, near-death. Despite this, Nintendo will release its new Wii U console on November 18, ushering in the eighth and possibly last generation of traditional home consoles as we know them. Consider this: Dedicated gaming sales — including living-room consoles and handhelds — are in the midst of a four-year tailspin. You might say that's because of a bad economy, but then you'd have to explain why movie revenue and cable TV subscriptions have largely stayed the same. Or why music sales, gutted by online streaming and piracy, have held up better than slumping sales of console games. Or why the popularity of social, mobile and PC games have skyrocketed to unthinkable heights.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Confirmed And In Development. Revealed By Voice Actor Bill Murray As He Spills Beans

Modern Warfare 4 is officially in development let slip Bill Murray, the voice actor who will be reprising his role as Captain Price in this newest installment in the breakthrough Call of Duty FPS war franchise. And no, he is not the Hollywood comedian you're thinking of.

It's unknown whether this game is in development for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC or for next-generation consoles. Given that the series is annual, it will probably hit by 2013 for 360, PS3, PC and possibly Wii U or other platforms.

Here is an interview featuring Bill Murray on his character from Modern Warfare 2.

Apparently the actor didn't realize that the person he was speaking to was a videogame journalist who would pass on this information, thinking he was just a fan of the Call of Duty franchise (i.e., your average joe).

The exact quote went something like this:

"Yeah, on Monday I am off to meet Infinity Ward about the next game, Modern Warfare 4, I’m doing work on the sequel to Modern Warfare 3, it carries straight on and I only ever appear in the Modern Warfare games…"

Keep note that the wallpaper at top is Call of Duty 4 wallpaper, but if you look at it the right way it almost looks like it says "Modern Warfare 4 wallpaper" ;)

GTA 5 Releases 2013. Grand Theft Auto 5 Is Set In Los Santos (ie LA California)

Grand Theft Auto V (GTAV) will be released in Spring 2013 confirmed Rockstar for Xbox 360 and PS3. This game will arguably be the last of the big-budget AAA titles to be released for the current-generation of systems, as we'll likely learn of the immanent next-gen Xbox 720 or PS4 systems by the time the new GTA hits next year.

This time Grand Theft Auto moves to Los Angeles in a city called "Los Santos" and will feature towns and cities surrounding Los Angeles, California, so we can probably expect to see cities like San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Fresno, Sacremento, San Diego or Long Beach.... That is, Rockstar has tons of locations to work with given that the game is based, essentially, in their version of California. It even features Hollywood, called "Winewood" in the game. Previous GTA games have featured several cities, so you would expect that this one will follow suit.

It will also be interesting to see whether this game has a greater emphasis on Hispanics, given that they make up 30% of the population in California and given the liberal stance of California towards illegal aliens in comparison to their more Conservative neighbor, the state of Arizona. This is ripe political and social material from which to pick for plotlines if Rockstar wants to go in that direction. It would be fitting given that San Andreas had a focus on black Americans, and GTAIV had a focus on non-US immigrants (not to mention the GTAIV expansion, "The Ballad of Gay Tony" which had a gay pride focus, of which California is well-known), I think all of this is likely. But we'll have to see once more information on the game is available.

"Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious title in the series to date. Set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and the surrounding area, Grand Theft Auto V delivers a world of unprecedented scale and detail bursting with life, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean."

"Grand Theft Auto V builds on everything we've learned about open world game design," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "We can’t wait to share it with fans."

Pre-orders for GTAV will begin all the way back on November 5th 2012, which is almost here, so get ready to open your pocket books! Next year can't come soon enough!

Resident Evil 6 Archives Limited Edition Out Now. Launch Trailer

Resident Evil 6 Archives Limited Edition is the name of the Xbox 360-exclusive version of the latest installment in Capcom's long-running Resident Evil series! It was released on October 2, 2012 on Xbox 360 and PS3, with a PC version scheduled for release later on.

Here is the Resident Evil 6 launch trailer!

This version of the game, called "Archives", costs quite a bit more ($30 more to be exact at $90) but includes a myriad of great additional content over the vanilla version of RE6.

Archives includes the following:
* Resident Evil: Code Veronica X HD - The full, digital version of the high-definition re-release of Resident Evil: Code Veronica X. Originally released for the PS2 in 2001 and an update of the Dreamcast original from 2000, this version features all-new Achievements to earn, remastered music, tweaks to the menus, new item placement and such, alongside an all-new leaderboard system. Code Veronica marked the first polygonal 3D version in the series but maintained the slow-pace, tank controls and static camera angles that the series was built on. Costs $20 if bought separately.
* Resident Evil 4 HD - The full digital version of the high-definition re-release of Resident Evil 4. Originally released for the GameCube in early 2005, and later re-released in updated form for PS2 (late 2005) and Wii (2007) as well as PC (2007) and mobile (2009 for iPhone, 2010 for iPad). This game popularized the "over-the-shoulder" third-person viewpoint that would become an industry standard in later games like Gears of War. The first fully 3D game in the series, it re-invented Resident Evil as a high-octane action game. Costs $20 if bought separately.
* Resident Evil 5: Gold - The full digital version of Resident Evil 5 alongside every piece of downloadable content and expansion released for the title. RE5 marked the first true current-gen entry in the series, taking advantage of the high graphical fidelity of the Xbox 360 and PS3, to take the series to new heights of high-octane action. Costs between $20 and $40 separately.
* Resident Evil: Degeneration CG movie - This is the only version of Resident Evil 6 that includes the full-length CG feature film Resident Evil: Degeneration on DVD! Costs $10 if bought separately.

It's worth noting that the PS3 Resident Evil 6: Limited Edition is arguably a better value, as it includes virtually every major game in the Resident Evil saga (outside of Code Veronica) including digital versions via the PlayStation Network of: Resident Evil 1: Director's Cut, Resident Evil 2: Dual Shock Edition, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Resident Evil 4 HD and Resident Evil 5: Gold.

So definitely weigh the two options, based on which games you already own and how badly you want the digital HD versions and the CG movie versus the PlayStation Network PSOne Classics retro versions sans Code Veronica, and make your choice! Or you can buy the regular version of Resident Evil 6 at the normal price of $60.

Halo-Maker Bungie Snags Paul McCartney To Compose Music For Destiny Franchise

The house that Halo built, Bungie, is working with Paul McCartney of The Beatles, who is composing new music for Destiny, the codename for the upcoming videogame franchise that Bungie is working on. Announced the ex-Beatle via Sir Paul McCartney's Twitter.

Bungie, of course, is no longer associated with Halo or Microsoft and the Xbox 360, having moved on to they-hope greener pastures with an all-new franchise that has yet to be announced or revealed. However it was ousted thanks to a legal battle between Activision and Call of Duty developers Jason West and Vince Zampella.

Revealed was a contract that Activision signed with Bungie for an upcoming project called "Destiny", which would see Bungie creating a series of four Massively Multiplayer-style sci-fi fantasy action shooting games; with a new game hitting every other year with yearly expansions (codenamed Comet) filling in the gaps. The contract however is old, dated 2010, and the project was to begin in 2013. Whether or not all of this is still the case remains to be seen, and project-details, target release date and even platforms have yet to be revealed.

However this story will certainly draw the interest of Halo fans and thus Xbox 360 owners given that it is Bungie we are talking about.

Due to Paul McCartney working on the next Bungie project, you are almost insured that the music will be a huge part of the game. Paul McCartney tweeted that he is excited to work with Bungie, the studio that made Halo, to write new music for the game.

Sir Paul McCartney isn't super familiar with videogames, but he has worked on them in the recent past thanks to The Beatles: Rock Band, and says that he thinks the medium is exciting, and a good way to bring new music to new people outside of the music world; although he doesn't play videogames himself. He is 70 years old, after all.

Here's a The Beatles: Rock Band video review by GameSpot.
